But it was not until that terrible scene in connection with the sin of the golden calf that the tribe of Levi stood apart and began to occupy a distinct position.
Exodus 32:26 Then Moses stood in the gate of the camp, and said, Who [is] on the LORD'S side? [let him come] unto me. And all the sons of Levi gathered themselves together unto him.
The people had sinned against the ways of God the Father and had bound themselves into a condition of bondage and servitude to another Father and many other gods.
1 Corinthians 8:5 For though there be that are called gods, whether in heaven or in earth, (as there be gods many, and lords many,)
The burden of that false way was not yet heavy upon their shoulders. What had they done? They had made Fathers of men denying God the Father..
Matthew 23:9 And call no [man] your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven.
They had given themselves and their inheritance over to a central and controlling power that could exercise judgment. That power would become an Apotheos, an appointor of gods and judges. Those judges would stand as gods over them and stand between them and the true God. They would now serve their new master the State.
"Are men the property of the state? Or are they free souls under God? This same battle continues throughout the world?"1
Exodus 32:27-28 And he said unto them, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Put every man his sword by his side, [and] go in and out from gate to gate throughout the camp, and slay every man his brother, and every man his companion, and every man his neighbour. And the children of Levi did according to the word of Moses: and there fell of the people that day about three thousand men.
Moses had brought men out to serve God in His kingdom on earth but they walled themselves in and God out of their City State made of tents. They had built an altar where their sacrifices were no longer born of charity but of power, fear and might.
Numbers 3:12 And I, behold, I have taken the Levites from among the children of Israel instead of all the firstborn that openeth the matrix among the children of Israel: therefore the Levites shall be mine;
The religious primogeniture was taken from the first born and then conferred on this tribe of Levites. They henceforth were devoted to the service of the sanctuary of God because they belonged to God. They were servants of the Lord in hopes that they would learn to be Sons of the Father.
As being wholly consecrated to the service of the Lord, they had no territorial possessions. Jehovah was their inheritance.
Numbers 18:23 But the Levites shall do the service of the tabernacle of the congregation, and they shall bear their iniquity: [it shall be] a statute for ever throughout your generations, that among the children of Israel they have no inheritance.
It was ordained that they should receive from the other tribes the tithes of the people according to their service to the people as they ministered to the tents of the congregation.
Numbers 7:5 Take [it] of them, that they may be to do the service of the tabernacle of the congregation; and thou shalt give them unto the Levites, to every man according to his service.
The people were to give to them forty-eight separate cities along with their dwellings. They had "suburbs", i.e., "commons", for their herds and flocks, and also fields and vineyards.
Numbers 35:7 [So] all the cities which ye shall give to the Levites [shall be] forty and eight cities: them [shall ye give] with their suburbs.
Levitical cities and suburbs and lands in common were scattered all over Israel, so that the Levites could act as the nervous system to the whole nation as they served the tents of the people. These Levites were to be a living altar to minister to the people according to the ways of God with in the family of man. They were to provide the services necessary to keep the people free and separate from any other gods.
